The "Heard on the Hill" blog, citing an anonymous source, says that McKeon's staff are blaming hackers for leaking the internal strategy memo SCVTalk posted about last week:
Last Thursday, Haueter was attending a meeting of the Republican Party of Los Angeles County and was asked about how an internal memo that laid out the offices strategy for addressing the California Republicans involvement in the latest Countrywide mortgage scandal got out.

In any event, the strategy memo seems to have failed at distracting and downplaying the mortgage story. Regional newspapers are still talking about McKeon's 1998 mortgage. Today the Long Beach Press Telegram weighed in:
It was reported that when McKeon and his wife got a $315,000 mortgage refinance on a house in Stevenson Ranch in 1998, Countrywide knocked 1 point off the interest rate, waived some fees and did not require the congressman to produce documentation. The total saving to the McKeons is estimated at more than $3,000. This, at a time when McKeon's western-wear business was going through bankruptcy and his income shrank.
